A move to either of these teams would be crazy.

Earlier this week we reported that the Kevin Shattenkirk trade had regained some life after comments from TSN insider Darren Dreger revealed that he believed the defenseman was still a trade target despite comments from St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong that suggested he could remain with the team.

Needless to say the rumors have picked up again following Dreger's comments, comments that have since been echoed by other sources, and the most interesting of those rumors suggest two more very unexpected teams may be in the mix here.

According to a report from The Hockey Press, both the Toronto Maple Leafs as well as the Montreal Canadiens may now be in the mix on Shattenkirk. His addition to either of these squads would be a blockbuster deal, and when you consider that both Montreal and Toronto were reportedly among the teams interested in signing Kris Russell to a sizable contract, their interest in Shattenkirk makes sense.

Shattenkirk is the better player, he's not a free agent but it's clear he's looking to sign a long-term contract extension before his deal runs out this year, and while acquiring him would likely require you to give up considerable assets, he's the kind of player you expect to be on a top defensive pairing for the long-term.

Needless to say if either of these teams were truly interested in Russell, that focus may have shifted drastically with Shattenkirk available.
