The NHL has just come to terms on a new sponsorship deal with Adidas, a deal that will end their current partnership with Rebook starting in 2016-2017 and one that some feel may open the door to advertisements being placed on jerseys.
From TSN's Rick Westhead:
The National Hockey League appears poised for radical changes to its team jerseys in the wake of a deal that may pave the way for advertising on team uniforms. A source told TSN that the deal would surely mean big changes to uniform designs, perhaps with Adidas’s familiar three-stripe trademark being added to some or all team jerseys.
“The NHL might not want big changes like that, but for the money Adidas will pay, they’ll be pretty aggressive pushing to make the NHL jerseys identifiable with their brand,” the source said.
Don't be shocked if one of those changes is the start of advertisements on jerseys, after all the NHL has estimated it could earn an additional $120 million dollars per season by doing so, and that kind of money carries a lot of influence.
“If you’re already deciding on a major NHL jersey overhaul, maybe with Adidas striping on the jerseys, then it seems like it would be a good time to introduce the ads, if you plan to do it anyway,” a league source told TSN.
It's something no fan wants to see, but it may be inevitable at this point.
