There was hope that once the World Cup of Hockey was complete that negotiations between Johnny Gaudreau and the Calgary Flames would resume, but according to multiple reports there has been nothing but silence.

On Wednesday TSN insider Bob McKenzie provided the most recent update on the negotiations and based on his comments it sounds like both sides are standing their ground, and both sides are very, very far apart.

First McKenzie believes that the Flames are unwilling to pay Gaudreau more than they are currently playing Mike Girodano who makes $6.75 million per season, largely due to the fact that Gaudreau has no bargaining position as a restricted free agent who is immune to offer sheets.

That is a long way away from the kind of money that Johnny Gaudreau is looking for. While initial reports have suggested Gaudreau is looking for a contract that will pay him $8 million per season, McKenzie hinted at the fact that the actual number may be in excess of $8 million.

It's not just a gap, it's a large canyon, and one has to wonder how it will get closed if as McKenzie claims neither side is talking to the other.
