Leafs at risk of losing young prospect to the KHL.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are running the risk of losing one of their players to the Kontinental Hockey League, although it may be a minor one.

In his most recent "30 Thoughts" piece, Sportsnet hockey insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that there are those within the KHL who would like to see the return of 25-year-old Leafs defenseman Nikita Zaitsev. Thankfully it seems like the Leafs have the upper-hand when it comes to holding on to him, at least for now.

From Friedman:

Same with Toronto and Nikita Zaitsev, although he’s a restricted free agent. Word is the KHL would love to get Zaitsev back, but he likes it in the Ontario capital.

As long as Zaitsev remains happy in Toronto it means that the KHL would have to produce a massive offer to pry him away from the NHL, and with the current state of that league only a few select teams would be capable of such an offer, and there's no guarantee they would have the desire to make such an offer.

Friedman did not touch on what organizations want Zaitsev back.
