It appears big changes may be coming to our game. The NHL's competition committee recommended expanded video review and a change to the faceoff rules on Thursday, but it looks like there were two other proposed rule changes that are likely to be unpopular among fans. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported on Hockey Night in Canada's "Headlines" segment Saturday night, the committee intends to prepare a proposal that would restrict goaltending equipment to discourage an emphasis on blocking over protection. Another suggestion was reportedly made this week by Mathieu Schneider, NHLPA special assistant to the executive director and competition committee co-chair. The former defenseman floated the idea of disallowing certain shot-blocking strategies. It was not unlike a suggestion made by former Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey in 2008. Gainey proposed the elimination of full-body sliding in the defensive zone, in order to promote scoring. "There will not be time to institute changes for 2015-16, but there is a desire to have a proposal ready in time for the following season," Friedman wrote in Sunday's edition of "30 Thoughts." "The idea is to prevent gear that is more about blocking than it is about protection," he added. Schneider's idea was only preliminary and would need to be revisited in future meetings before being approved, but it is likely players won't take kindly to restrictions on how they can block shots. Many are told that if they don’t block shots, they won’t play, so changes to blocking strategies may affect the livelihood of some players. The NHL made changes to equipment the last 2 years and had the lowest scoring season in over a decade this year. Does the game need constant changes to remain exciting?
