Every once in a while you see an NHLer go above and beyond for a good cause.

Philadelphia Flyers star forward Jakub Voracek is one of those players. According to reporter Brady Trettenero, Voracek’s sister Petra, has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. This unfortunate news inspired Voracek to up with a way to raise both awareness and money for the cause. Voracek vowed to donate $1,000 for every point he scores, in order to help the victims of the disease through a foundation he announced Tuesday.

“The idea is excellent,” Voracek told Czech news outlet NovaSport. “Professional athletes have so much money that they can afford it.”

Voracek certainly has the funds to back his statement, after signing an eight-year, $66-million contract extension with the Flyers in July. However, part of the point of this venture is to raise awareness and he definitely hopes the foundation “can (raise) more.”

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease in which your immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers your nerves. Myelin damage disrupts communication between your brain and the rest of your body. Ultimately, the nerves themselves may deteriorate, a process that's currently irreversible.

What a great guy and an even better cause. We certainly hope that Voracek wins the Art Ross this season after reading this.
