The cause of Marek Svatos' tragic death is revealed.

The hockey world was rocked today by the news of the sudden death of Marek Svatos.

The former Colorado Avalanche' forward died on Saturday in in Lone Tree, Colorado. He was only 34 years old.

Svatos' death reported by Slovakian journalist and author David Puchovsky, who is president of the Avalanche’s European fan club, Eurolanche. As per the Denver Post, there was apparent "drug (medicine) overdose" information regarding Svatos' passing. They also add that Svatos' death was an accident, a family-related source confirmed to Eurolanche.com.

Drafted 227th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2001, his most productive year with the Avs was the ‘06 season. He played in only 61 games and tallied 50 points, 32 of those points being goals. In 334 NHL games with the Avs', Predators, and Senators, the Slovakian born Svatos scored 100 goals and added 72 assists.

Avalanche executive vice president and general manager Joe Sakic played with Svatos in Colorado from 2003-09.

"The entire Avalanche organization is extremely saddened by this news," Sakic said in a statement. "Marek was a tremendous person, a talented hockey player and a great teammate. Our thoughts, prayers and our deepest sympathy to his wife, children and his entire family."

In 2006 Svatos represented Slovakia in the Olympic games in Turin.

Svatos ended his career with stints in the KHL and in Slovakia in 2013-14.

He is survived by his American-born wife Diane and their two children.
