The reason behind U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE] decision to detain Los Angeles Kings defenseman Slava Voynov has been revealed and it probably will not come as any surprise that deportation was the motive.

According to TASS, the decision to place Voynov in removal proceedings was based on “a comprehensive review of the case.”

“As with anyone who’s facing deportation, he’ll be afforded due process and the immigration court will ultimately determine whether he’ll be subject to removal from the U.S.,” said ICE Western Region Communications Director Virginia Kice.

Voynov was suspended by both the Kings and the NHL upon his arrest last October. That suspension remains in effect pending the outcome of the deportation hearing. Voynov was charged with domestic abuse after an incident involving him and his wife.

Voynov is a native of Russia, and could be removed from the U.S and sent back to his native country should ICE decide he has violated his right to remain a citizen.
