27-year-old forward announces retirement from NHL!

With the NHL and AHL seasons over, we all expect a few players to hang up the skates, however, we are surprised to see a young 27-year-old calling it quits.

On Friday morning, the Syracuse Crunch tweeted a thank you and goodbye message to forward Michael Bournival as he has announced his retirement from hockey.

Bournival was drafted in the third round, 71th overall of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche, who quickly flipped him to the Montreal Canadiens in return for Ryan O’Byrne.

After a full season with the then Habs farm blue Hamilton Bulldogs in 2012-13, he got a chance with the Canadiens scoring seven goals and 14 points over 60 games and adding an assist in 14 playoff games. He continued in 2014-15 with time split between Montreal and Hamilton. He scored 5 points in 29 games for the Canadiens. He however suffered a concussion that kept him out of action for over a month and had also injured his shoulder prior to the head trauma.

At the beginning of the 2015-16 season, Bournival was placed on IR for two months with an undisclosed injury that was believed to be concussion. He played just 20 games during 2015-16 and the Canadiens declined to tender a contract to Bournival as a restricted free agent.

He signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning, but spent most of the time with the Crunch in the AHL, dealing once again with injuries. His 2017-18 season was cut short due to a knee injury and was only back in November this season with the Crunch. He recorded a goal and three points in five games for the Crunch before being injured once again. This time, it was a shoulder injury that required season ending surgery with a 6-7 month recovery time. He was done for the season and has now decided to hang up the skates.

In 24 games total with the Lighting over the course of the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons, he posted two goals and one assist.

We wish him all the best. Bonne chance!
