Both the fans and the journalists who cover the Montreal Canadiens have severely critiqued the team's defensemen since the start of the 2017-18 season. And most of the time, they were right, since Jeff Petry, Jordie Benn, Mark Streit and even Karl Alzner were struggling. But it looks like they started performing as well as they should, which is great.

Mitch Melnick mentioned in his latest article in The Athletic that Benn has stepped his game up lately, and said it was pretty interesting to see him play alongside Alzner:

"Yes, that was Benn who sprung Galchenyuk free with a perfect saucer pass from inside his own zone. Benn and partner Karl Alzner have looked much more comfortable of late."

The fact they both play so well together may come as a surprise for many people, since Alzner has only played with Jeff Petry during the training camp. As a matter of fact, everyone thought both guys were building a great chemistry, but it looks like head coach Claude Julien has now found the right combination.

Are you satisfied with how well Benn and Alzner have been playing lately?
