A frustrated McDavid calls out management and coaching for another failed Oilers season

With the Colorado Avalanche picking up a single point in their shootout loss to the St. Louis Blues last night, the Edmonton Oilers have been mathematically eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the 15th time in 16 seasons. Ouch.

When Oilers captain Connor McDavid heard the news after his team’s 3-1 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, he was visibly frustrated and angry. McDavid was asked by reporters about his frustration level and well.. he’s frustrated.

“It’s really high. It’s really, really high. We want to play in the playoffs as a team. I personally want to play in the playoffs. I’m not happy about it. It’s going to be a long summer. It’s been an insane season. Coaching change. GM change. Good times and bad times. It’s been a roller coaster. It’s been emotionally challenging.”

Is there room for optimism heading into the offseason though? McDavid rolled his eyes and offered up a blunt assessment of his team’s situation.

“We don’t even have a GM. We have a lot of crap to figure out. I hope we can put the right man in the spot and can put together a good team. We let (losing) streaks drag on, we let times were we weren’t able to find wins drag on. You have to find a way to stop the bleeding, quick.”

You gotta feel for McDavid and for Oilers fans. I mean… it’s not like McDavid himself could have done much more. With a career high 41 goals and 115 points in 75 games he’ll once again be in the Hart Trophy discussion at the NHL Awards this upcoming offseason. Along with teammate Leon Draisaitl, who has 47 goals and 102 points this season, McDavid and the Oilers are the first team since the 1989-90 Pittsburgh Penguins to have two 100+ point players and yet fail to make the postseason. Double ouch.

Regardless of whether you’re an Oilers fan or not, you absolutely have to feel for McDavid. Yes, he’s just 22 years old and there are hopefully better days ahead for the Oilers franchise, but you can’t help but feel that he’s just wasting his prime years playing for an inept organization. Here’s hoping that the team’s ownership and management can finally put a proper plan together this offseason to get McDavid’s Oilers back on track.
