The Zamboni driver keeps making history…

David Ayres is making the absolute most of his 15 minutes of fame. The AHL Zamboni driver turned NHL goalie has been on an absolute media whirlwind for the past three days since he earned a victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Ayres, of course, was called upon to act as the emergency goalie after Hurricanes netminders James Reimer and Petr Mrazek both went down with injuries. Ayres looked shaky to begin - as you can imagine - but shut the door in the third period and became the first NHL emergency backup to earn himself a win.

It was a historic feat: Ayres became the oldest goaltender in league history to win his first career NHL game.

The Hockey Hall of Fame was not going to miss out on this.  A HHOF official was present on Saturday and retrieved the stick that Ayres used for the game in order to bring it back to the hockey temple. This is what Director of Communications Kelly Masse confirmed on Monday.

On top of that, Ayres continues to be treated as a hero. He is now an honorary North Carolinian and will be present at the game tonight to get all the applause for the fans.
