The Toronto Maple Leafs have begun to make moves prior to the February 29 NHL Trade Deadline.

The Leafs have traded forward Shawn Matthias to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward Colin Smith and a fourth-round pick in this year's NHL Draft.

Matthias, 28, scored six goals and tallied 17 points in 51 games with the Leafs this season, while posting a minus-10 rating. He signed with the Leafs in the off-season on a one-year, $2.3 million deal.

Matthias posted a career-high 18 goals in 72 games with the Vancouver Canucks last season. He has scored 75 goals and tallied 148 points in 459 career games with the Leafs, Canucks and Florida Panthers.

Smith, 22, scored 13 goals and added 21 assists in 54 games with the AHL's San Antonio Rampage this season. He was selected by the Avalanche in the seventh round of the 2012 NHL Draft. He posted eight goals and 26 assists in 76 games with the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters last season.

In 2013, Smith finished fourth in scoring in the Western Hockey League with 106 points in 72 games with the Kamloops Blazers. He was named a first-team WHL All-Star that same season.

The Maple Leafs now own 12 selections in June's draft, as their rebuild looks promising as of now.
