It seems as though former National Hockey League player Akim Aliu realizes that this is his moment and now it appears he is going to do everything in his power to maximize that moment as much as he can.

Earlier this evening on Hockey Night in Canada, Sportsnet's National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that Akim Aliu would be meeting with the NHL next week to discuss what has been described as “the cultural problems in hockey,” as he sees them. It is an interesting take to be sure considering how little actual NHL experience Aliu has had during his career, however given the events that transpired this week I can certainly see why the league would like to hear his version of what happened all those years ago. Aliu however will not be traveling alone.

Although it was not confirmed at the time Friedman stated on the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast that there were rumblings that Aliu had retained the same law firm that has previously represented controversial National Football League quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

“I think a lot of where we’re going to go is going to be determined by this meeting.” Friedman said on Hockey Night in Canada. “Now as you can imagine, Aliu has retained counsel of course – he has a law firm in Canada and in Toronto. But also, there was word he has engaged with Geragos & Geragos, that is a US firm that also represents Colin Kaepernick.”

Kaepernick of course became the subject of much attention in the United States after he began kneeling for the United States national anthem prior to games while playing as a backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers organization. The controversial football player has since made his mark on the country not by playing football but rather by becoming a high profile activist for various causes that he supports. If this is the path that Aliu intends to walk I believe that he will have a much more difficult time than Kaepernick if only due to the fact that, unlike Kaepernick before him, he was never truly established as a quality NHL player to begin with.

No doubt we have not heard the last of this just yet.
