This is another chapter to the Alex Galchenyuk story in the National Hockey League.

On Wednesday, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun of TSN revealed that the free agent was getting close to signing a deal with the Ottawa Senators. According to team insider Bruce Garrioch, the deal is expected to be worth one year at $1.05 million.

There is no doubt that Galchenyuk had a very strong start to his career. Being drafted third overall by the Montreal Canadiens, he set himself up as a top-six forward, however, it did not last. In his last three seasons, he has managed goal totals of 19, 19, and 8 in this shortened season. And that’s without saying that he was on four different clubs ever since 2018, when he was traded by the Habs to the Arizona Coyotes in return for Max Domi. He then moved to Pittsburgh to join the Penguins on a short stint and ended the shortened season with the Minnesota Wild, who did not extend an offer to keep him around for the next season.

There is hope for the 26-year-old, who is still young enough to gain consistency and confidence in his play. Ottawa might be the right place to do so as the roster is young and in rebuilding mode, which could take away some pressure off Galchenyuk’s back in the meantime.

It is not that huge of a risk for Senators general manager Pierre Dorion, who could end up with a great boost up front, if Galchenyuk gets back to his old ways that made him a first round pick back in 2012.

In 549 career NHL regular-season games with the Montreal Canadiens, Arizona Coyotes, Penguins and Wild, Galchenyuk has put up 135 goals and 185 assists for 320 points, along with 201 penalty minutes.

Let’s see if this new change of scenery, the fifth in the past two years, will finally be the right one for Galchenyuk.

UPDATE: The Senators confirmed the addition of Galchenyuk to their roster an hour later.
