One of the greatest Russian hockey stars to ever play the game has died today.

According to Russian publication championat.com, legendary Soviet ice hockey star Vladimir Petrov has passed away early Tuesday morning after losing his battle with cancer.

He was 69 years old.

Petrov was a two-time Olympic champion (1972,1976), and was a crucial participant in the immortal 1972 Soviet Union-Canada Summit Series. He, along with fellow Soviet legends Boris Mikhailov and Valeri Kharlamov, formed one of the most dominant and creative lines to ever grace the game.

Petrov sits 4th all-time in scoring in World Championships, with 154 points (74 goals and 80 assists) in 102 games. He added 7 points (3 goals and 4 assists) in 8 games of 72' Summit Series. He was a nine-time world champion, eleven-time USSR champion and perennial Soviet league leading scorer and player of the year in the 1970's.

Petrov was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2006.

In 595 games with Krylya Sovetov Moscow, CSKA Moscow and SKA Leningrad, Petrov recorded 370 goals and 343 assists for 713 points.

Truly a legend of the game, in a time where the Soviets were the superpower in hockey.
