The Calgary Flames have just secured themselves a very good deal, but it may be the type of deal that could cost them significant dollars in the long run.

According to an announcement made via the Calgary Flames' official website, the Flames revealed on Sunday that they had come to terms on a new deal with 23 year old forward Andrew Mangiapane. Mangiapane a former Flames 6th round pick (166th overall) at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft is coming off what was clearly the best season of his career and had been holding out all summer for a new deal. Over 44 regular season games with the Flames last season he recorded 8 goals and 5 assists for a total of 13 points while recording a plus minus rating of +11. Additionally Mangiapane appeared in 5 playoff games for the Flames, recording a single goal and no assists during the playoffs.

This will be a very short term deal, the contract has a term of just one year, and surprisingly this will also be a two-way deal between Mangiapane and the Flames organization. It would seem as though Mangiapane had done enough in this most recent season to earn himself a one-way deal, but it is obvious that the Flames did not agree. Instead the forward will earn just over the league minimum on his new deal with him set to earn $715,000 at the NHL level next season.

It seems as though Magiapane was willing to take this deal in an effort to bet on himself and earn a significantly better deal come the next offseason. If Mangiapane can continue to bring to the ice what he delivered for the Flames last season, and do it consistently over the course of an entire NHL season, then it seems likely that he will earn a significant raise on his next contract. Mangiapane knows this and it is for that reason that reports suggesting he landed in Calgary prepared to accept a qualifying offer make all the sense in the world.

For right now this looks like a terrific signing for the Flames, and a cheap one at that, but if they get what they want out of Mangiapane once again this season, his price tag will assuredly increase.
