Another offer on the table for Taylor Hall

We all expect the National Hockey League’s free agency season to be quite different this fall. As you know, under the new CBA deal, the upper limit of the salary cap will be held flat at $81.5 million and remain there for the upcoming seasons. The financial fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic will have a huge impact on forward Taylor Hall and the plans he had following the postseason, when he hoped to enjoy a fun run at free agency. Hall could lose big due to the flattened salary cap, especially since he was looking to test the waters as an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career.

That might play in the Arizona Coyotes’ favour and they might take this opportunity as early as today: TSN’s Darren Dreger has revealed that the Yotes are expected to make another pitch to keep the star forward in the desert.

At the end of July, the Coyotes reportedly made him a first offer, one that was said to be embarrassing for the top forward. Hall’s market value is still believed between $8 million and $11 million, while NHL insider Elliotte Friedman believes the Yotes’ first offer was below $7 million.

They will have to do better this time around…

Hall has mentioned his interest to remain in Arizona when he landed in December from the New Jersey Devils. He spent this season playing out the last of as even-year deal signed with the Edmonton Oilers in 2012. He recorded 10 goals and 27 points in 35 regular-season games with the Coyotes, and added two goals and six points in nine games upon the NHL’s Return to Play in Edmonton’s bubble.

A lot of things have changed in the past months for the Coyotes as John Chayka is no longer the team’s general manager. Assistant Steve Sullivan has since been promoted to the role of GM in the interim and will have to do better than Chayka with Hall (amongst other things).

The Coyotes do have limited cap space and will have to shed some salary if they intend to re-sign Hall to a decent offer. If they don’t intend to move up into the market value range, Hall could leave and check out the UFA market. Several teams are hoping to make a pitch at Hall as rumours have mentioned the Calgary Flames, Montreal Canadiens and even the Oilers as interested parties.
