The Toronto Maple Leafs picked up a huge win over a pretty solid Vancouver Canucks team on Saturday night and it was made all the more impressive by the fact that the Maple Leafs are currently struggling through a rash of pretty bad injuries, most notably the big blows to their blue line including the absence of defensemen Cody Ceci, Morgan Rielly and Jake Muzzin.

Although the Leafs would eventually secure the win by a scoreline of 4 - 2 this was a hotly contested affair with veteran defenseman Matt Marincin picking up the surprise game winner with his first goal of the season, but it was a play that came very late in the game's third period that really sealed the deal. The Canucks had just pulled their goaltender and were looking to tie up the game with a 6 on 5, but veteran Maple Leafs forward Zach Hyman was having none of it. After sacrificing his body multiple times on the same shift to block shots from the opposing Canucks Hyman finally had an opportunity to produce offensively and he did not miss his chance, burying the puck into the empty Canucks net and burying the proverbial dagger into the heart of the Canucks hopes of walking away from the game with any points in hand.

It was an outstanding performance from Hyman and it was one made all the more impressive by the level of energy he brought to the ice so late in the game, so much so that it drew a hilarious comparison from teammate Auston Matthews during his post game interview.

"Yeah they call him the Sidney Crosby of 6 on 5," joked Matthews. "You know he's just so good at getting on the other teams defense and forechecking and getting pucks back."

It is true that Hyman has become something of an empty net specialist in the type of situations that the Leafs were faced with on Saturday night, and it seems fair to suggest given the comparison, even if it was presented in a humorous manner, that people are starting to take notice. No doubt the fact that his teammates are among those taking notice has to feel pretty good for Hyman.
