In case you missed it, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews had another multi-point game last night, potting two assists on linemate Kasperi Kapanen’s two goals in a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings. Matthews now has now put up multiple points in each one of the Leafs’ seven games to start the season and currently sits atop the NHL’s scoring lead with a remarkable 10 goals and 16 points in just seven games. Ridiculous…

Over his first two seasons in the NHL, Matthews has shown flashes of pure offensive dominance, but he’s never looked quite as dominant as he has to start this season. He has an incredible 2.29 points per game average and is showing no signs of slowing down. There’s a very good chance that we’re witnessing the coming out party for a player whom everyone already thought was a terrific player. The way Matthews is playing though, there’s no denying that he’s a fantastic player… the question now is whether or not he’s the best player in the entire NHL.

With multiple points in each of his team’s first seven games to start the season, Matthews has joined some elite, Hall of Fame level company.

Check this out:

Auston Matthews of the @MapleLeafs is the fifth player in NHL history to record multiple points in each of his team’s first seven games to open a season.

Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy… that’s some pretty elite company. If Matthews can put together a campaign that resembles anything close to the point totals that Gretzky, Lemieux and Bossy managed during their careers, Leafs fans would be absolutely over the moon. He’s got five games to go to match Super Mario, but again Matthews doesn’t look like he’s slowing down anytime soon.

In other Leafs news, head coach Mike Babcock commented on the injury status of starting goaltender Frederik Andersen and confirmed that he'll get the start later this week on the road against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Frederik Andersen will start Thursday versus Pittsburgh, Babcock says.

Well… there you have it, Leafs fans. You can now safely exhale…
