Avalanche and Islanders announce a 1 for 1 trade.

The Colorado Avalanche and the New York Islanders have announced a relatively minor 1 for 1 trade.

According to an official announcement from the Avalanche organization, they have acquired 25 year old defenseman Kyle Burroughs from the New York Islanders and have sent journeyman forward A.J. Greer to the Islanders organization in exchange. I say this is a relatively minor move because neither player actually made any appearance in the National Hockey League last season, and in fact in the case of Burroughs he has never played in a single NHL game during his career. 

Greer was not currently under contract with the Avalanche and was a restricted free agent, and if I had to guess I would suspect that this trade was an indication that the Avalanche had no intention of signing him to a new deal. Greer has been viewed as a liability at times throughout his career due to the perception of him as a hothead both on and off the ice, and it honestly comes as little surprise to see the Avalanche moving on here. Since being drafted in the third round (39th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Avalanche Greer has appeared in a total of just 37 games and has 1 goal and 5 assists for a total of 6 points to his name at the NHL level. 

Burroughs was a 7th round pick (196th overall) of the New York Islanders at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and at 25 years of age he has never had a chance to play at the NHL level. It seems unlikely that this will change moving forward, and his inclusion in this deal may have been purely to balance out the number of contracts going each way.
