The Colorado Avalanche confidently headed to the podium to select defenseman Bowen Byram with the fourth overall pick.

The crowd was excited to hear that the B.C. boy was selected early in the NHL Draft.

Byram is a creative defender with excellent skating ability and a booming point shot. He’s the top ranked defenseman in this year’s draft and he projects to be a top pairing blueliner in the NHL for years to come.

The 6 foot, 1 inch, 200 pound 17 year old recently became the first defensemen in WHL history to lead the league in playoff scoring. The Cranbrook, BC native put up an incredible eight goals and 26 points in 22 games for the Vancouver Giants during the postseason following an insane 71 point regular season.

“Byram is smart, decisive and generally makes the right play. His ability to hold onto the puck and wait for a seam is something that may go under the radar a bit but is really the hallmark of his game,” says prospects expert Ryan Biech of The Athletic.
