Babcock confirms the worst for Leafs blueliner Dermott

In case you missed it, Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Travis Dermott went down HARD after taking a big hit from Edmonton Oilers forward Brad Malone last night and did NOT return to action.

Here’s the play in question:

It’s clear that Dermott injures either his shoulder or his wrist on the play and, as a result, he’ll be out of the team’s lineup for awhile. Leafs head coach Mike Babcock confirmed after the Leafs’ big 6-2 win that Dermott will join fellow blue liner Jake Gardiner on the injured reserve.

Gardiner, of course, was ruled out of last night’s game with back spasms, an issue he has been dealing with off and on for weeks now. Prior to last night’s game, the Leafs also confirmed that he’ll be out “week to week”, as well.

With both Dermott and Gardiner out long term, the Leafs’ depth will be tested down the stretch. Your time to shine, Justin Holl.
