Bergevin spotted at NHL game, linked to extremely controversial trade.

Oh boy oh boy this is a spicy one.

There is an absolutely stunning rumor emanating from Montreal right now and it's one that fans, in what is arguably hockey's most rabid fan base, will either love or hate with every fiber of their beings. First let's begin with the facts that we know for certain and then we can jump ahead to the speculation or rumor that has followed.

According to a breaking news report from Montreal Canadiens insider Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports, the Montreal Canadiens have sent a scouting mission to New York on Saturday. Lavoie reports that his "spies" in New York have informed him that Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin is expected to personally be on hand in Madison Square Garden for the Saturday afternoon match up between the New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils. Obviously the presence of any general manager in a rival building where his team is not playing raises eyebrows, but the impact is multiplied several times over both due to the fact that the National Hockey League's trade deadline is just 3 days away and due to the fact that Bergevin is normally one of the most secretive general managers in the entire league.

This would appear to suggest that Bergevin is looking to make a deal with either the Rangers, who in my opinion are the most likely candidate, or the Devils ahead of the NHL trade deadline on Monday. The Devils are 15 points out of a playoff spot and it seems a forgone conclusion that they will miss the playoffs but general manager Ray Shero has been adamant that players like Taylor Hall will not be traded in season so it seems unlikely that he intends to make a ton of big moves at the deadline. Moves like the trade the Devils made earlier today appear to be much more the way things are trending for the Devils at this time.

So what is Bergevin doing in New York? Well Habs reporter Brian Wilde of Global Montreal suggested the name of one extremely controversial player that could have caught the eye of the Habs general manager, that of Rangers veteran Chris Kreider.

"Imagine if Marc Bergevin is in NYC to watch Kreider," wrote Wilde. "That would be a weird trade for veteran Habs."

Kreider of course is one of the most universally hated players in Montreal and seeing him wear a Habs jersey after such a tumultuous relationship with the fans there would really be something to see. Kreider's ill gotten reputation of course stems from an infamous incident in 2014 Eastern Conference Final in which Kreider injured Canadiens star goaltender Carey Price.

For what it's worth we know that Mats Zuccarello, Kevin Hayes and Adam McQuiad are not the players being watched by Bergevin as they were all benched prior to this game in the anticipation of the trade deadline.
