Bettman comments publicly on Sens’ financial problems and potential relocation

It’s not exactly a secret that the Ottawa Senators have gone through a tough calendar year. Without getting into the entire mess that includes trading their captain, trading their two leading scorers, having their assistant GM get arrested and having owner Eugene Melnyk effectively kill any chance of a new arena… let’s just say it’s been a rough go for Sens fans.

To make matters worse, there’s the constant threat of bankruptcy and relocation with Melnyk at the helm. There’s a sense among some industry insiders that Melnyk and the Sens are on shaky financial ground. In fact, the whispers of the team’s financial problems have gotten so loud that they’ve forced NHL commission Gary Bettman to make a public statement.

Cool your jets, hockey fans. The Sens aren’t going anywhere… at least according to Bettman.

Interesting.

Earlier this season when Melnyk essentially nuked any chance of the promising LeBreton Flats proposal for a new rink in downtown Ottawa Bettman stood behind the Sens owner, as well.

“Major projects, the ebb and flow of team performance, is something that will change over time,” Bettman said at the time.

“I know Eugene Melnyk is very committed to the Senators and is very focused on looking for what he has to do and what his best options are under the circumstances.”

But will the league step up and fix things?

“I haven’t been asked to step in, but we’re always willing to help when appropriate and when asked.”
