Big mistake made in trade earlier today, new details now make it official.

First and foremost we reported this trade earlier today, and we were premature in doing so, while several reliable sources had reported the trade, it should not have been reported as an official deal until it was in fact an official deal.

With that said, it sounds like the teams involved may have had a major screw of their own, although you can bet that they will never admit as much, those teams being the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers.

It was reported earlier today that the Oilers had dealt forward Teddy Purcell had been traded for Florida's 3rd round pick in 2016, except here's the thing, the Panthers don't have their third round pick in 2016, it's already part of a conditional deal, one that was made in a three way trade with Florida, New Jersey and Minnesota.

However the teams have now made the deal official, but there's still a major screw up somewhere, as the Panthers appear to believe they have dealt their 2017 pick, and the Oilers have announced it's the 2016 pick.

We're sure this will all get worked out, but we don't remember ever seeing this kind of mistake surrounding a trade. Furthermore it now sounds like the Oilers may end up with a pick that comes later in the draft than previously expected, the Panthers also control the Wild's 3rd round pick, and the Oilers sound like they will get the weaker of the two, while New Jersey gets the better of the two from the previous trade. Not great news for their fans.
