Big proposed trade between the Jets and the Habs.

The Montreal Canadiens were left with a lot of holes to fill after they lost some of their better know players to free agency, players like Alexander Radulov and Andrei Markov.

Now with the Habs having some significant cap space that could allow them to make moves, including taking on salary in a trade deal, there has been rampant speculation about what they may do next. In a recent interview on TSN's 690 in Montreal NHL analyst Pierre McGuire suggested the Montreal Canadiens should be targeting two players on the Winnipeg Jets roster.

"Jacob Trouba and Josh Morrissey would be two guys, if I were the Canadiens looking for players, those would be two that I would try to get on the back end."

Now to be clear, McGuire does not believe the Canadiens would be able to pry these assets away from the Jets as he feels the Jets place too high a value on both players as things currently stand.

That being said Trouba is set to be a free agent once again after signing a short-term two-year deal with the Jets after a very publicized contract hold out, and there's always been a lingering sentiment that the long-term plan for the Jets was to circle back on a trade for Trouba.

The question of course becomes what would the Jets want in exchange for either player in a trade deal and perhaps more importantly what the Habs could offer. Montreal has traded a lot of their assets away in recent moves for players like Andrew Shaw and Jonathan Drouin to name a few, but again they do have a healthy chunk of cap space.

Habs general manager Marc Bergevin has stated he would consider taking on a bad contract for assets, and perhaps that could be an avenue for them to acquire a piece or pieces to make a trade with the Jets a reality.
