Big updates on Red Wings Jimmy Howard and Anthony Mantha.

The Detroit Red Wings had some pretty good news to share on Sunday but unfortunately it also came with some pretty bad news as well.

We will start with the good. According to an official announcement from the Red Wings organization veteran goaltender Jimmy Howard has been activated off of injured reserve. Additionally the long time Red Wings netminder has been called up from his conditioning stint in the American Hockey League with the Grand Rapids Griffins and is now set to once again join the main roster. This is of course terrific news for the Red Wings and for Howard who has not appeared in a game for the Red Wings since the 27th of November.

This news is of significant importance for the Red Wings who get their goaltender back in spite of his struggles this season, Howard had recorded a 3.94 goals against average and an .887 save percentage in his 14 games prior to being injured. Additionally with Howard set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season the Red Wings will want time to evaluate him as a goaltender to potentially re-sign moving forward or as a potential trade candidate prior to the National Hockey League's trade deadline in February.

Unfortunately as I stated previously the good news also comes with some rather bad news for the Red Wings. The Red Wings also announced today that, while Howard was coming off of injured reserve, forward Anthony Mantha will be placed on injured reserve following Saturday night's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Mantha was of course injured during a scuffle with Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Muzzin, a scuffle that ended with Muzzin slamming Mantha down to the ice with some type of judo throw that left Mantha looking like he was in a lot of pain. The designation of injured reserve indicates that the Red Wings expect Mantha to be out for at least the short term, although it is worth noting that the holiday break is coming up so this will give Mantha some extra time to rest and recover from whatever injuries he may have suffered as a result of the slam.
