Blackhawks and Oilers linked in major trade talks?!

The Oilers are looking for more changes and the Hawks would surely benefit from this...

Both the Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks have made a coaching change this season, but most people know it's a small part of the solution when it comes to the long-term success of the team.

For the past few weeks, as a way to find the best solution to the teams' woes, on top of a new face behind the bench, fans and pundits have been suggesting that the Oilers and Hawks made trade to improve their roster to head in the right - or at least, a better direction. Finally, one of them made the suggestion that the two clubs could make a deal with one another.

James O'Brien wonders if the Blackhawks could be able to move veteran defenseman Brent Seabrook to the Oilers. According to him and what he sees in the player and new Oilers head coach Ken Hitchcock, the pairing could be a great match. He also believes that Seabrook is right up Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli's alley.

While the suggestion seems plausible on the surface, things get quite dicy when you look at Seabrook's contract. In September of 2015, a full year before his then-current contract was expiring, the Blackhawks and Brent Seabrook agreed to an eight-year, $55 million dollar contract extension, good for $6.875 million against the salary cap through the 2023-24 season. The 33-year-old deal has a no-movement clause in place until 2021-22, after which he must submit a list of five teams he can be traded to in 2022-23 and 10 teams in 2023-24.

It seems quite unrealistic, right?

Seeing that Seabrook is making money like an elite player but has three goals and 10 points through 22 games played, Chiarelli could ask the Hawks to sweeten the deal. And if the Hawks are entertaining the idea of moving him, what can they expect as a return? They could probably save a few million dollars against the cap... but is it worth it?

The Oilers have been looking at a way to bolster their back end, but what would they have to give up in return of Seabrook? He might be the style of player Hitchcock and Chiarelli like, however, we do not know how long both men will remain in the organization for...

Would you pull the trigger on that major trade?
