The Chicago Blackhawks have announced that they’ve cut defenseman Adam Boqvist and forward Aleksi Saarela and have assigned both players to the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs.

Check it out:

A surprising move, especially given how well the 19 year old Boqvist has played in preseason action. The team’s 8th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft put up a goal and an assist in three preseason games and well… one thing’s for sure, the kid isn’t lacking in confidence. Check out this sick move he pulled off against the Detroit Red Wings last week:

The kid’s got hands, that’s for sure. While it’s disappointing that he won’t make the Blackhawks’ opening night roster, he’ll gain some valuable experience in the AHL. He put up 20 goals and 60 points in 54 games with the OHL’s London Knights in 2018-19.

As for Saarela, who arrived with defenseman Calvin de Haan in an offseason trade with the Carolina Hurricanes, put up 30 goals and 54 points in 69 games with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL last season.
