Blackhawks management works more magic, clears additional cap space.

The Chicago Blackhawks have created a dynasty and many have credited general manager Stan Bowman as the mastermind behind that dynasty for the shrewd moves he has made to keep his team competitive, and on Tuesday we saw yet another example of that.

According to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times the Blackhawks have once again found a way to liberate some cap space, avoiding using a buyout on forward David Runblad by convincing the player to mutually agree to terminate his deal.

Runblad wouldn't likely get much playing time if he remained on the Blackhawks roster, in fact he could find himself buried in the American Hockey League, and comments reported by the Sun-Times from Stan Bowman would seem to indicate that the chance for an opportunity elsewhere was enough to convince Runblad to terminate his deal.

“David indicated to us that he wanted to kind of get a fresh start, so I think he’s looking to maybe pursue some other opportunities, whether it’s in the NHL or maybe in Europe,” Bowman said as per the Sun-times' Mark Lazerus. “He’s still a young guy. I think he wants to get back to playing a lot of hockey, and I know that was the reason he wanted to go over to Europe mid-season. We were willing to honor that request and we’re going to let him find a spot where he knows he’s going to be a regular player every day, a lot of minutes. I think he’s got a bright future.”

Runblad is just 25, but has had very little production in very limited time in the NHL over the past two seasons, and it's unclear what level of interest he would generate on the open market at the NHL level.
