Blashill appears to focus the blame on 2 players after another tough loss for the Wings.

The Detroit Red Wings have had a rather terrible start to the 2018 - 2019 National Hockey League regular season winning just 1 out of their first 10 games. On Friday night it finally looked like the Red Wings may have turned a corner but unfortunately for their fan base it turned out to be just a little false hope.

The Red Wings got veteran defenseman Mike Green in the line up for the first time this season after a viral infection forced him to miss all of the preseason and regular season thus far and early on it looked like he may have been a major difference maker. The Red Wings largely dominated a very tough Winnipeg Jets squad through the first 20 minutes of play but towards the end of the first period is when things began to fall apart for the Wings. 

The reaming 2 periods saw the Red Wings on the back foot for nearly the entire contest, and Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill appeared to focus in on poor plays from 2 of his players after the game. Although he did not call them out by name it was very clear that he was discussing the undisciplined play of Tyler Bertuzzi and Andreas Athanasiou, undisciplined play that left the Red Wings trying to climb out of a rather big hole.

"They had us on our heels a bit and then you compile that with three straight penalties, you're in your end the whole time and you're defending," Blashill said as per Red Wings insider Ansar Khan. "The first penalty, I don't know whether it was a good penalty or not, I have to look at it again. The second penalty was an undisciplined penalty, the third penalty was getting beat up the ice when you don't have to get beat up the ice. You can't take three straight power plays against that power play."

Perhaps the biggest disappointment for the Red Wings on Friday night was the fact that their lackluster play in the final 2 frames of the game once again resulted in a stellar performance from veteran Jimmy Howard being for naught. Howard made 38 saves during the game, allowing just 2 goals over 3 periods, and you would hope that a performance like that would be reward with more offensive output from his forwards.
