The Columbus Blue Jackets announced on Thursday that they have reached terms with defenseman Ryan Murray on a two year contract extension, avoiding his upcoming free agency.

Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen made the official announcement today.

“Ryan Murray is a talented, smart player who has been a very steady performer on our blue line and we are extremely happy to have this deal completed,” said Kekalainen. “Ryan has earned more ice time, showed steady improvement and contributed in all situations for us throughout the season. We look forward to his continued growth and development with our club.”

Columbus did not announce the financials of the deal, but according to Blue Jackets insider Rob Mixer Murray will make $2.825 million per season for each of the next two season. The move makes perfect sense for Columbus, who now will look to sign defenseman Seth Jones who is set to be coming a free agent this summer.
