Boston mayor sends poignant letter to Blues star fan Laila Anderson

We all know who Laila Anderson is and we are all inspired by her courage. We know her as a survivor, but also as a St. Louis Blues hardcore fan, and on Thursday, it was revealed that one of the biggest Bruins fans, Boston mayor Martin Walsh sent her a poignant letter to congratulate her on her first championship.

The 11-year-old girl is battling the rare auto immune disease HLH and met Blues defenseman Colton Parayko when the team visited St. Louis’ children’s hospital. The players fell in love with her love for the club and she quickly became an inspirational symbol for the Blues. They brought her and her mother to Boston for Game 7 and had her on the ice for their Stanley Cup celebration.

The courageous kid underwent chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant back in January, when the Blues stood dead last in the league’s rankings. She had to remain in isolation for a good chunk of St. Louis’ mid-season turnaround during her battle, but she recovered in time to attend Game 3 of the Western Conference final.

No matter where your allegiances lie, everyone was and is rooting for Laila. And we can all appreciate when he put down on paper and sent to Laila:

“My name is Marty and I am a passionate, lifelong Boston Bruins fan. My loyalty to the Bruins (and all Boston sports teams) run deep,” the letter reads.
“I am writing to you because a couple of weeks ago, I was at home, watching pre-game coverage of Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals, when I saw a story about you, your love of the St. Louis Blues, how the Blues’ players love you in return, and how you inspired an entire city and fan base. After watching the segment I turned to my partner, Lorrie, and said, ‘This stinks! I love the Bruins and I want them to win! … But I really want Laila to win, too!’
“I want to extend to you then, my heartfelt congratulations on your beloved Blues winning the Stanley Cup.”

I gotta go get a tissue now… That’s what sports are all about.
