Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand is not a happy man and quite frankly I find it very easy to see his perspective in this particular situation.

Marchand has absolutely cut loose on a currently unidentified National Hockey League official after that official pulled Marchand out of the game during the third period of Boston's Friday night game against the New York Rangers. Marchand of course was yanked off the the Bruins bench on the orders of one of the NHL's concussion spotters but it was the timing of the entire fiasco that really seemed to anger the Bruins, and for good reason. The incident which caused the spotters to pull Marchand from the game took place in the second period when Marchand ran head first into the extended elbow of Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba.

I say Marchand ran into the elbow because as you can see from the clip below there is clearly no foul play here on the part of Trouba:

If you watch the video you can certainly understand why a concussion spotter would want a player to go through the NHL's concussion protocol following the incident. What the Bruins did not understand however was why Marchand was then allowed to play the remainder of the second period, sit in the locker room for the full 20 minute intermission between periods, come back out for the third period, only then to be pulled long after the incident had taken place.

“This game is on NBC, he gets hit at the end of the second period and he gets pulled at the beginning of the third. To me, we’re trying to market our best players. I thought it was fairly evident when he get hit and then they decided to pull him at the start of the third,” said Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy as per NBC Sports. “That’s the only explanation I got. I don’t know why they wouldn’t do it between periods. There’s an 18-minute intermission. He was [pulled by the concussion spotter] and he checked out fine, but it’s a little frustrating for him especially when it happened. I didn’t like the timing of it at all.”

Cassidy may not have liked the timing, but if Cassidy did not like it than Marchand himself absolutely hated it. The notorious Bruins agitator went off after the game when speaking to reporters and was ruthless in his characterization of the job done by the league's concussion spotter. Marchand went out of his way to imply that the spotter was not watching the game at all, but was instead busy stuffing his face with food.

"That's embarrassing. They had 20 minutes to sit there and view the tape and call that in. But they make me come out in a 2-1 game when we’re just starting to get some momentum. Guy up there is busy eating pizza and cheeseburgers and can't watch the game,” said Marchand. “Maybe next time he'll pull his head out of his butt and watch the game. I skated into his elbow, but [I was] fine.”

Of course this could very well lead to spotters being quicker to send Marchand to the room in the future, so there may very well be a scenario in which these comments will backfire on Marchand in the future. That being said though I think everyone can understand why this was an infuriating situation for the Bruins in what was the final period of a very close game.
