Marchand left out?

Every year the National Hockey League selects an elite group of players to represent their respective teams at the annual All Star Game, and without fail every year there are fans and players who are left feeling angry. I must admit that being on the selection committees for an event like this is not an enviable job, no matter who you pick there is going to be someone upset at the end of the day, but that doesn't mean the selections should be exempt from criticism.

One person who took issue, or at least appears to have taken issue, with the selections made by the National Hockey League this year is Tucker Boynton of Barstool Sports. Boynton did not come right out and say that he disagreed with any of the NHL's selections this time around, but he chose to present one particular statistic that appears to indicate he is indeed unhappy. Boynton listed the top 13 NHL point leaders one by one and pointed out how every single one of them, with one notable exception, was selected to the upcoming NHL All Star Game in 2020. That notable exception? Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand.

So for the sake of illustrating Boynton's point let us go down the list of the NHL's leading point producers:

#1 Connor McDavid - 63 points - NHL All Star.

#2 Leon Draisaitl - 61 points - NHL All Star

#3a Brad Marchand - 58 points - *Not an NHL All Star

#3b David Pastrnak - 58 points - NHL All Star

#5 Nathan MacKinnon - 56 points - NHL All Star

#6 Jonathan Huberdeau - 53 points - NHL All Star

#7 Jack Eichel - 52 points - NHL All Star

#8 Artemi Panarin - 51 points - NHL All Star

#9 John Carlson - 50 points - NHL All Star

#10 Patrick Kane - 47 points - NHL All Star

#11 Auston Matthews - 46 points - NHL All Star

#12 Aleksander Barkov - 45 points- NHL All Star

#13 Elias Pettersson - 41 points - NHL All Star

You can see why just looking at this list some fans in Boston might be quick to cry fowl with Marchand being excluded from the list, and to be honest they very likely have a point here. As we all know of course the NHL likes to fill the game with representatives from every single team which often means that more deserving players get left out in favor of players who, while also deserving, get the spot purely off the back of wearing a different jersey. To make matters worse though the NHL also added a "Last Man In" vote where fans from around the league get to select the last player, with candidates from every team. who will make it into the All Star game, and Marchand didn't even make the cut for that list. No instead it will be teammate Patrice Bergeron who will represent the Bruins as their candidate for the "Last Man In" vote, which means Marchand has well and truly been ignored this year.

As for the regular all star selections, it will be both David Pastrnak and Tuukka Rask who represent the Bruins at the All Star game next month.
