Brad Marchand sends vivid message to fans who complain about stoppage

Several players and head coaches across the National Hockey League in the two bubbles cities met with media on Friday afternoon to reinstate their position in supporting the league in postposing games on Thursday and Friday nights in the aftermath of Blake’s shooting, and in response to the wider issues surrounding systemic racism, social justice and police brutality.

Boston Bruins’ Brad Marchand was one of them and while most players spoke about the importance of taking a stand and making a difference in a predominantly-white sport, the forward did more than that.

He had a message for the frustrated fans out there who would prefer to see players in action rather than voicing their opinions on social issues. This is what Marchand had to say:

“Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. It’s very evident and clear this is bigger than sports.

"Too bad. We have bigger things we care about, want to do, and want to improve on."

“Sports is a luxury. When it becomes about people’s safety & lives, and people being comfortable to be in their own skin. . . I understand people want to watch the games, but we have bigger things that we care about & want to do, and the people we want to support.”

Several fans will have to consider his words and take a good look at themselves. Players all agree that this is bigger than sports or the Stanley Cup and that they needed to do this now to stand together and send a clear message.

And Marchand had one more to say and hopes the “stick to sports” crowd will change their views.

“I think that’s one thing that people continually mix up. They bring politics into these situations. This is not what this is about, we’re not being political. That’s not the goal…

“…There needs to be changes made throughout society. It’s bigger than hockey, bigger than sports. It’s about people being equal. People want to point in different directions and that’s what we want to avoid.”
