Breaking: 23-year-old gets nearly $6 million extension in just his second NHL season!

It's been a quiet day in the National Hockey League but there is one big announcement today from the Vancouver Canucks.

According to an official report from the Canucks website the team has agreed to terms on a new two-year contract extension with 23-year-old defenseman Ben Hutton. From the official announcement:

Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the club has signed defenceman Ben Hutton to a two-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $2.8 million.

"Ben is developing into one of our young, emerging core players and is an important part of our future," said General Manager Jim Benning. "We're excited to see him further elevate his game and help this team compete for years to come."

Hutton is just 20 games into his second career NHL season and this has to feel great for the young man who has been one of the few bright spots on a floundering Vancouver Canucks roster. Hutton continues to develop into a very good young blue liner and this move from the Canucks was likely intended to save the organization money in the long term as it seems likely he is headed for some big money contracts in the near future.

It's one of those situations where both player and team walk away feeling like they won on this deal.
