Thomas Nosek is in the Detroit Red Wings lineup tonight. Wait…what?

The 24-year-old left-shooting winger from Pardubice, Czech Republic was sent down to the minors on March 18th, but was immediately recalled on an emergency basis the next day. He is expected to replace Mitch Callahan in the lineup against the Buffalo Sabres tonight.

Nosek was signed to a two-year entry-level deal by Detroit in May of last year, and has been playing most of his time for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL. He had 15 goals and 15 assists in 70 games last season, and has 15 goals and 25 assists for 40 points in 49 games for the Griffins this season.

The versatile winger played in the Czech hockey system since 2007, suiting up for HC Pardubice for the majority of his time there. He made his debut in Detroit’s prospect system in 2014, but was held pointless in all six of his NHL games last season.

Tonight, Nosek will reportedly dress for his first NHL game of the season. Despite being called up to the Red Wings earlier this season, the 6’3, 209 lbs Czech winger has only seen the press box as a healthy scratch.

With Detroit set to miss the playoffs for the first time in a long, long time this season, these last dozen games are the perfect opportunity to try out some of their prospective talent. If Nosek can find his first NHL points tonight, it could go a long way in securing his position with the club in the future.
