A man who stands accused of stealing millions from two former National Hockey League players will be facing his day of judgement in court.

According to a breaking news report from the CBC, former NHL player agent Stacey McAlpine has officially been charged with both money laundering and theft stemming from accusations that he stole more than $12 million dollars from two former players.

Former NHLer Dany Heatley alerted the Winnipeg police financial crime unit of the issue in 2013 and he was joined at the time by beloved former Ottawa Senators defenseman Chris Phillips.

Phillips was so close to McAlpine that the former agent was the best man at Phillip's wedding and the two were reportedly the best of friends. If the charges are now being laid it's because prosecutors believe they now have evidence to convict McAlpine of these crimes, which would make this a stunning betrayal indeed.

More to come on this story as it develops.
