AHL Captain to step in for injured Flyer

When there’s a big hole in your lineup, you need to find a big presence to fill it. The Lehigh ValleyPhantoms, Philadelphia’s AHL affiliate team, might have just that kind of player in Colin McDonald.

The 32-year- old McDonald is a right-shooting winger with decent size (6’2, 219 lbs) with 145 games ofNHL experience across three teams. He broke into the league with the Edmonton Oilers in the 2009-10 season, going on to play for the Islanders and Flyers.

McDonald’s call up is in response to the season-ending injury of Matt Read, who suffered an upper-body injury after blocking a shot in a game against the New York Islanders earlier this week.

Read has been a versatile forward for the Flyers this season, playing up and down the lineup in a variety of roles. While many saw his injury as an opportunity for the Flyers to field some of their younger and newly acquired college talent, they appear to have decided to opt for a more veteran presence to fill the lineup.

McDonald has 23 goals and 18 assists for 41 points in 67 games for the Phantoms this season. He has a decent shot is a reliable bottom-six forward.

Flyers GM Ron Hextall commented that he wasn’t expecting newly signed Union College star prospect Mike Vecchione to start in tonight’s game against the New Jersey Devils. The young Phenom will likely play in the NHL before the season is through, but tonight it looks like McDonald will be the one making his NHL debut this season.
