Breaking: Another NHL head coach has been fired!

NHL legend given the axe.

It is turning into something akin to a black Sunday for coaches around the National Hockey League.

We only had to wait a few short hours after the 2018 - 2019 National Hockey League regular season officially came to a close to see our first head coach getting the axe, and it now appears that he will not be alone at the unemployment line today. This time however the man being let go is one of the most well respected former players in the entire league.

According to an officiall announcement from the Buffalo Sabres Department of Public Relations, the organization has decided to part ways with now former head coach of the Buffalo Sabres Phil Housley. The news comes as very little surprise given how the Buffalo Sabres started the season out red hot before completely collapsing down the stretch. Housley may have been able to survive it initially but when the Sabres went the entire month of March without picking up even a single regulation win the writing was already on the wall.

According to the official report from the Sabres it was general manager Jason Botterill who made the move on Sunday and it was also Jason Botterill who relived Housley of his duties. You have to wonder how much longer Botterill himself will have in his current position given the lack of success the Sabres have achieved since he took over the position from former Buffalo Sabres general manager Tim Murray. That being said though arguably the most questionable move of his tenure was the massive deal handed out to star forward and Sabres captain Jack Eichel and there are rumors that ownership was heavily involved in making that decision for Botterill.

It is unclear at this time if Housley is the only member of the Sabres coaching staff that has been let go and it is very hard to gauge that without having more information. Housley was hired by Botterill directly so if he believes in his coaching staff he may look to promote someone internally to the head coaching position. That being said though things were so bad in Buffalo down the stretch that I would be shocked if any of the Sabres coaches were sparred.
