Unsurprisingly the National Hockey League was looking to make an example of Antoine Vermette and they have done just that.

An official report form the NHL's website had revealed that the Anaheim Ducks forward has been suspended a whopping 10 games for his unprovoked attack on an NHL official.

The NHL released the following statement:

Anaheim Ducks forward Antoine Vermette has been automatically suspended for 10 games, without pay, for violating Rule 40.3 (Physical Abuse of Officials) during NHL Game No. 840 in Minnesota on Tuesday, Feb. 14, the National Hockey League announced today.

The incident occurred at 7:33 of the third period. Vermette was assessed a game misconduct for abuse of officials.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Vermette will forfeit $97,222.22. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

There hasn't been any explanation from Vermette and any he attempted to offer would likely be met with serious skepticism from fans. As a result we do not expect there will be many objections to this suspension.
