Breaking: Awful news for Murray and Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that starting goalie Matt Murray has been diagnosed with a concussion. There’s no timetable yet for Murray’s return, but head coach Mike Sullivan will address the injury after the team’s practice this afternoon.

Penguins goaltender Matt Murray has been diagnosed with a concussion and will not practice today. Coach Sullivan will address the injury after practice.

Murray, of course, missed nearly a month of action last season when he was diagnosed with a concussion in February. The 24 year old star goaltender has struggled with injuries the past two seasons and without the safety net of Marc Andre Fleury in Pittsburgh anymore, the pickings are slim in the Penguins crease. It’s expected that the team will call up 23 year old Tristan Jarry from the Wilkes Barre Scranton Penguins to back up Casey DeSmith with the big club.

Murray struggled in his first two starts in 2018-19, surrendering 11 goals on 65 shots. The 24-year-old suffered a concussion last February, causing him to miss nearly a month of action.

Murray has struggled in his first two starts this season, giving up 11 goals on just 65 shots. His 5.45 goals against average and .831 save percentage are amongst the worst stats in the league so far. Again, no timetable on Murray’s return, but don’t be surprised if the team decides to be extra cautious with him once again. Murray is critical to the Penguins’ success both for the 2018-19 season and beyond. His play during the 2015-16 Stanley Cup Playoffs and 2016-17 Stanley Cup Playoffs vaulted him from AHL starting goalie to two time Stanley Cup winning superstar NHL goalie and facilitated the deal between Pittsburgh and the Vegas Golden Knights for Fleury. Given Murray’s injury history and his poor performance since the Fleury deal though… you wonder if Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford might want a do over on his transaction.

Regardless, we wish nothing Murray nothing but the best in his recovery from this concussion. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, the league is a lot more interesting when the Penguins are in the Stanley Cup mix.
