Washington Capitals head coach Barry Trotz wrote his name in the NHL record book tonight, when his team started their game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. This game was Trotz 1,493rd game in the NHL as a coach, and he is now tied with Lindy Ruff for fifth all-time in career NHL regular season games coached.

Trotz started his coach career in the NHL when he became the first coach in the Nashville Predators history in 1998-1999. He spent 15 seasons with the Predators before they fired him after the 2013-2014 season. He is coaching the Capitals since the 2014-2015 season. Trotz won the Jack Adams Award (best coach) for the 2015-2016 season.

He owns a record of 557 wins, 479 losses, 60 ties (when games could still finish tied in the NHL) and 100 losses in overtime or in shootout.

The Capitals are currently first in the Metropolitan division with a record of 30-15-5.
