On a night where a slash to the face went unpunished and seemingly unnoticed by the National Hockey League, we now have a player suspended for using a naughty word during a heated exchange with an NHL official.

According to a report from the National Hockey League's Public Relations department, Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw has been suspended for one game as a result of "homophobic slur" he used on Tuesday night during a loss to the St. Louis Blues. Furthermore Shaw will now have to undergo sensitivity training, which considering the context in which the slur was used, frankly seems ridiculous. Shaw was also fined $5,000 for his gesture(flipping the bird) towards the official.

Here's the official statement from the league:

Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw has been suspended for one game for making a homophobic slur during Game 4 of the team's first-round Stanley Cup Playoff series with the St. Louis Blues in Chicago on Tuesday, April 19, the National Hockey League announced today. Shaw has also been fined $5,000 for directing an inappropriate gesture at the on-ice officials during the same game. Shaw will also be required to undergo sensitivity training.

"While Mr. Shaw was apologetic and remorseful for both the offensive comments and the inappropriate gesture directed at the on-ice officials, he must be held accountable for his actions," said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. "The emotion of the moment cannot and will not be a mitigating factor for the conduct that is expected of an NHL player."
