Breaking: Bowman addresses rumors behind coach firing
Keystone Press

When the Chicago Blackhawks were unceremoniously swept in their first round playoff matchup against the Nashville Predators, general manager Stan Bowman promised there would be changes in the Windy City. Less than a month later and he’s kept true to his promise, relieving long-time assistant coach Mike Kitchen.

At the time of Kitchen’s firing, critics and analysts of the move saw it as a direct shot at head coach Joel Quenneville. Kitchen had been Quenneville’s long-time assistant and, according to reports, Quenneville was not consulted or notified of the firing ahead of Bowman’s decision. Now, in an effort to quell the rumors about a strained relationship between the GM and his coach, Bowman has come forth to clarify things. When asked by Brian Hedger of the Chicago Sun-Times about a possible rift between the two, Bowman stated, ‘‘People think that’s the case, even though there’s no validity to it. I learned a long time ago that you can’t control what other people are going to think or say. We know what the truth is, and none of that is accurate. But that’s OK. That’s the way it goes.’’

Bowman went on to say that he’ll work alongside Quenneville to hire Kitchen’s replacement because, “he’s going to be working with that person day-to-day.’’

What do you think? Is there something more below the surface?
