Breaking: Bruins buy-out underachieving forward
Keystone Press

The Boston Bruins have announced that they’ve placed forward Jimmy Hayes on unconditional waivers for the purposes of a contract buy-out.

The 27 year-old Boston native’s three year, $6.9 million contract was set to expire at the conclusion of the 2017-18 season, but with today’s buy out he’ll hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent tomorrow afternoon. His $2.3 million annual cap hit is reduced to just $566,667 for 2017-18 and $866,667 for 2018-19.

With Hayes gone, the Bruins can now officially close the book on the Tyler Seguin trade. Hayes was the last remaining piece of the 2013 blockbuster trade, as he was acquired from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Reilly Smith, whom the B’s had acquired from Dallas in the Seguin deal. Oops… can we officially request a do-over?
