This does not look good for the Bruins.

This may be big trouble for the Boston Bruins if it turns out to be significant.

We have some breaking news to share with you Bruins fans and unfortunately the news is not good to say the least. During the first period of Saturday night's preseason contest between the aforementioned Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers veteran defenseman Torey Krug appeared to suffer an injury that would force him to leave the ice in the game's very first period.

Now normally this wouldn't be too huge an issue in the preseason as it could simply be a precautionary measure or perhaps even head coach Bruce Cassidy opting to rest one of his core defensemen before the season, but neither of these appear to be the case at this time. There is suspicion that Krug's sudden departure in the first period, something that indicates that this was not a part of the plan, is the result of an injury that Krug has just now suffered.

Needless to say an injury to Krug, especially one that comes in the Bruins final game of the preseason, would be a catastrophe for the Bruins if it proves to be serious. At this time we do not have an official update on the status of Torey Krug so keep in mind that at this time this is purely rumor and speculation.

The Bruins are already dealing with some significant injuries on their roster and the last thing they need is another injury that could have largely been avoided by keeping core players off of the ice ahead of the 2018 - 2019 NHL regular season. Now I'm certainly not second guessing head coach Bruce Cassidy's decision to play who he wants to play but losing a player like Krug in a meaningless game is an awful feeling for the fan base.

Krug has had at times a love/hate relationship with the Bruins fan base, largely stemming from the fact that he is an offensive dynamo from the blue line but continues to struggle with defensive liabilities in his own end. This has made Krug a core focus of the Bruins power play unit and his absence would make it considerably more difficult for the Bruins to run the power play. Add to that the fact that veteran Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron is also on the sidelines and you're trotting out a much weaker Bruins power play every single night early on in the NHL season.

Bergeron is not just a wizard on the face off but as a center in the NHL he's one of the best when it comes to creating space for his line mates on the ice, one need look no further than his chemistry with notorious Bruins forward Brad Marchand. Losing either Krug or Bergeron would be bad enough but having both side liend is enough to gets Bruins' fans to start yanking their hair out.

Update: We now have an official update from the Bruins and unfortunately I don't have any more good news to share with you. The Bruins have confirmed that Krug has been injured and that he will not be returning to tonight's game. Still no word on the severity of the injury at this time but stay tuned.
