BREAKING: Buffalo make it official and confirms their new GM!
Keystone Press

On last night’s Hockey Night in Canada broadcast from CBC, NHL insider Nick Kypreos announced that Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula has hired Pittsburgh Penguins assistant general manager Jason Botterill as the Sabres’s next GM.

While the news can’t yet be announced officially because of the Penguins’ playoff run, it’s expected that Botterill will formally be announced as the new boss in Buffalo at the end of the post season. The hiring should come as little surprise as Botterill has been rumoured to be a front runner for the position since it became available. What is a surprise, however is that Pegula indicated he’d like a general manager with some experience and success at the NHL level. That led many people to believe that he’d take a hard look at recently-fired Los Angeles Kings GM Dean Lombardi.

Regardless, it looks like the 40 year-old Botterill will be in charge of the Sabres moving forward. His track record of success as an assistant and a hockey operations executive with the Penguins cannot be ignored. He has been instrumental in the team’s management of the cap since coming aboard in 2009 and was considered for the GM position in Pittsburgh before Jim Rutherford was hired.
